Batteries and electrical equipment: return and disposal
Batteries and electrical equipment: return and disposal
Electrical equipment, batteries and rechargeable batteries contain valuable raw materials and may contain substances that are harmful to the environment and health. By collecting them separately, you enable proper treatment and the recovery of raw materials.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment
Collect separately – do not dispose of with household waste
Waste electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with household waste. It must be collected separately from unsorted municipal waste (Section 10 ElektroG). The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol indicates this obligation.

This includes, for example, LED torches with built-in batteries, USB to SATA adapters, USB hard drive enclosures and ring boxes with LED lighting. A dice set that glows solely thanks to luminescent material and contains no electrical components, on the other hand, is not electrical equipment.
Before handing in: batteries, lamps and personal data
Before handing in your old equipment, remove any waste batteries and rechargeable batteries that are not enclosed by the device, as well as any lamps that can be removed without being destroyed. Hand in the removed batteries at a separate battery collection point. This separation does not apply if old equipment is set aside by a public waste management authority in preparation for re-use.
Do not forcibly open or damage a device with a permanently installed battery. Hand it in with the battery still installed at a suitable collection point and point out that it contains a battery.
You are personally responsible for deleting any personal data on your old devices. In particular, delete the data on a hard drive before handing it in together with a hard drive enclosure.
Where you can hand in old equipment free of charge
- You can hand in old equipment from private households free of charge at municipal collection points or recycling centres. Your local authority can tell you about locations and acceptance conditions.
- Retailers that are obliged to take back equipment will take back an old device of the same type that essentially performs the same functions free of charge when you buy a new device (Section 17 ElektroG).
- You can also hand in small old devices with no external dimension greater than 25 cm free of charge at retailers that are obliged to take them back, without buying a new device. This is limited to three old devices per type of equipment.
Retailers obliged to take back equipment include in particular those with a sales area of at least 400 m² for electrical and electronic equipment, and food retailers with a total sales area of at least 800 m² that offer electrical equipment several times a year or on a permanent basis. Special requirements apply to distance selling; for electrical equipment retailers, the storage and shipping area for electrical and electronic equipment is decisive. Please ask the respective retailer about their return procedure.
As a distance seller with less than 400 m² of storage and shipping area for electrical and electronic equipment, DELALO is not obliged to take back waste electrical equipment under Section 17 ElektroG. Please use municipal collection points or the statutory return options at retailers that are obliged to take back equipment.
Further consumer information on the disposal of waste electrical equipment is available from stiftung ear. The statutory information requirements are set out in particular in Section 18 ElektroG.

Batteries and rechargeable batteries
Separate collection and free return
Waste batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. Please hand them in separately at a suitable collection point. This also applies to small button cells, such as CR2016 lithium button cells from LED ring boxes.
As a distributor, we take back waste portable batteries free of charge. This covers the battery category that we offer or have offered as new batteries, including batteries in devices. It applies regardless of brand and origin, and regardless of whether you buy a new battery from us or bought the waste battery from us (Article 62 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542).
Returns by post are possible, in compliance with shipping regulations, to the following address:
DELALO, Mehmet Basbayandur, Zur Jenfelder Au 21, 22045 Hamburg, Germany.
Return shipping: before sending, please email us briefly at info@delalo.de. We will send you a free return label so that the return costs you nothing.
Please contact us before sending lithium batteries or damaged batteries so that we can agree on a safe way of returning them. This does not affect your statutory return rights.
You can also hand in waste portable batteries free of charge at battery collection points in shops and at municipal collection points. Please check the acceptance conditions with the respective collection point, especially for damaged batteries.
What the symbols mean

The crossed-out wheeled bin means that batteries must be collected separately and do not belong in household waste. Chemical symbols below the bin indicate the heavy metals they contain:
- Pb: lead.
- Cd: cadmium.
- Hg: mercury; you are most likely to see this symbol on older batteries.
Storing and returning lithium batteries safely
Lithium batteries and lithium-ion rechargeable batteries can overheat and cause fires if short-circuited or damaged. Cover exposed terminals with non-conductive tape before storing and returning them. Protect the batteries from damage, heat and contact with metal objects. In particular, keep button cells out of the reach of children.
Please only send lithium batteries with taped terminals and in accordance with the carrier’s shipping conditions. Taped terminals alone do not make a shipment permissible: depending on the battery, its condition, the packaging and the mode of transport, further dangerous goods regulations or shipping bans may apply.
Damaged, swollen or leaking lithium batteries and devices containing such batteries must not be sent as an ordinary parcel or placed in an unsupervised battery collection box. Ask us or a suitable municipal collection point about a safe handover and point out the damage explicitly. Do not open batteries and avoid contact with any leaking substances.
By returning batteries safely and separately, you protect people and the environment and support recycling. The legal basis is Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 concerning batteries and waste batteries and the supplementary German provisions of the Battery Act (BattDG).
